Latest company news about Valve Automation on Power Loss in Chemical Pipelines: Technical Analysis of Fail-Safe Return Function

In the chemical and petrochemical industries, the operational continuity of pipeline systems is crucial. However, external power grid fluctuations or unexpected power outages are often difficult to avoid entirely. When an electric actuator loses its external power supply, valves left in a dangerous position can easily lead to media leakage, pipeline overpressure, or even serious safety incidents. Therefore, integrating control nodes with a fail-safe protection mechanism is an industry consensus during automation system sizing.

Working Principle of Fail-Safe Return Technology

To mitigate the risks associated with unexpected power loss, modern explosion-proof electric actuators, by an optional fail-safe return function, can drive the valve to a preset safety position when an abnormal power off occurs.

The core mechanism relies on the seamless switching of an internal energy storage solution. When the electric actuator is powered on, the internal control circuit will charge the super-capacitor (applied in DCL-Ex05/DCL-Ex10/20 models) or battery (applied in DCL-Ex40/60/100/200/300 models) to store energy. When the external power supply is abnormally disconnected, the control circuit detects the disconnect, switches the power supply to the super-capacitor or battery, and drives the electric actuator to the preset safety position. For engineering configurations, the safety position can be set to the full-close position, full-open position, or current position depending on process requirements.

When the external power supply is restored, the electric actuator will automatically exit the fail-safe return state and go back to normal working mode. This design significantly reduces the cost of manual intervention and on-site troubleshooting risks.

Compact Design and High System Reliability

Traditional large-scale industrial energy storage systems often require bulky external control boxes, increasing the complexity of on-site wiring and space occupation. Advanced valve automation solutions ensure that all fail-safe return components are put in the actuator body, keeping the characteristic of compact structure and small dimension. This integrated design not only optimizes the installation space around pipelines but also eliminates potential explosion-proof blind spots caused by external wiring.
