Oil and gas production, storage, pipeline and refining facilities often contain areas where flammable gases or vapors may be present. Electric motors, switches and electronic components can generate heat or electrical sparks, so selecting a valve actuator for these locations requires more than comparing torque and operating speed.

Engineers must verify the hazardous-area classification, gas group, temperature class, ingress protection, valve torque and control requirements before specifying an explosion-proof electric actuator.

Why Class I Division 1 Matters

Under the North American hazardous-location system, Class I identifies areas containing flammable gases or vapors. Division 1 indicates that hazardous concentrations may exist continuously, periodically or during normal operation. Groups C and D cover representative gases such as ethylene and propane.

An actuator used in these locations must carry a certification and protection marking that matches the project classification. A standard outdoor actuator cannot replace a Class I Division 1 electric actuator simply because its enclosure is rated IP67 or IP68.

An IP rating describes protection against dust and water ingress. Explosion-proof certification addresses whether electrical equipment can become an ignition source in the surrounding hazardous atmosphere. Both requirements may be relevant, but they serve different purposes.

Key Selection Factors for Oil and Gas Applications

Confirm the Area Classification

The first step is to review the specified Class, Division, Group and temperature code. The DCL explosion-proof actuator range carries North American markings including Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D, T5/T6, as well as Class I, Zone 1, AEx db IIC T5/T6 Gb.

T5 and T6 represent different maximum surface-temperature limits. The correct temperature code must be selected according to the process medium, its ignition temperature and the applicable certification documents. The general term “explosion-proof” is not sufficient for final engineering approval.

Calculate Valve Torque with an Allowance

Actuator output torque must exceed the valve’s maximum operating torque under actual process conditions. Valve size, differential pressure, seal design, fluid viscosity, deposits and long periods without operation can all increase the torque required to open or close a valve.

The DCL-Ex series covers standard output torques from 50 to 3000 Nm. Its product documentation recommends selecting an actuator with approximately 1.1 to 1.3 times the valve torque supplied by the valve manufacturer. This allowance can accommodate operating variation, but it should not replace a project-specific torque calculation.

Define the Control Signal and Power-Loss Position

Oil and gas valves may perform isolation, shutdown or flow-control duties. On-off actuators are suitable for full-open and full-close operation. Modulating versions can accept 4–20 mA, 1–5 VDC or 2–10 VDC commands and provide a 4–20 mA position-feedback signal.

Where a valve must move to a defined position after a power failure, an optional fail-safe module should be specified. The safety position can be configured as fully open, fully closed or the current position. This system uses a supercapacitor or battery rather than a mechanical spring-return mechanism.

Check Environmental and Mounting Conditions

The enclosure rating, ambient temperature, cable entries and valve interface must also be verified. DCL explosion-proof electric actuators have an IP68 enclosure rating, a stated ambient-temperature range of -25°C to +55°C and ISO 5211 direct-mount options.

IP68 supports a defined level of dust and water ingress protection, but the product literature does not specify a continuous-submersion depth or duration. The actuator should therefore not be described as suitable for permanent underwater service without additional technical confirmation.

For a North American oil and gas project, selection should begin with the hazardous-area classification, followed by valve torque, power supply, control signal, operating time and required safety position. A Class I Division 1 electric actuator is suitable only when its certification, model configuration and installation conditions all match the application.
